Pedal Collective Launches to Deliver Sustainable Delivery Solutions for Bristol Businesses

A group of former Zedify employees have launched Pedal Collective, a new worker-owned cooperative focused on providing eco-friendly delivery services to local businesses in Bristol.

Pedal Collective was born in the wake of Zedify’s quite sudden closure, after going into administration at the end of January. Jon, Sam, Fred, TJ and Rob created it with the desire to build a socially and environmentally sustainable delivery system for the city. The company utilises cargo bikes to transport goods, minimizing carbon emissions and reducing traffic congestion.

“The co-op model doesn't just mean a better deal for workers - it translates into quality, efficiency, and sustainability” Liam Pritchett, Writer & Cycle Courier

By embracing a cooperative model, they cultivate equity and shared responsibility, driving exceptional service and a dedication to exceeding expectations. Their focus on supporting local businesses with aligned values fosters a strong, mutually supportive community.

The allure of "free delivery" as a marketing tactic often masks the underlying pressures placed on frontline workers. While consumers enjoy the perceived savings, the reality is that the costs are shifted, frequently onto the backs of couriers and warehouse staff.

Press Release, Feb 2025

“We’re passionate about providing a delivery system that prioritises both social and environmental sustainability”

Rob Byrne, Co-Founder

“Pedal Collective is committed to fair wages, safe working conditions, and a positive impact on our community”

Jon Dennis, Co-founder

In an industry where the seven-day working week has become the norm, this cargo bike courier cooperative is taking a stand for work-life balance. Committed to sustainability not just in their transport but also in their way of working, the cooperative has collectively agreed to limit their operations to five days a week. They believe in working hard, efficiently, and cooperatively within those days while ensuring that rest and personal time remain priorities.

“Urban deliveries by bike bring speed, efficiency, and joy. Every time I deliver by bike, I see the smiles, both mine and the customer’s. It just makes sense"

Tad Jiunn, Co-founder

"Social impact not climate impact. Pedal Collective is a group of friends working together with great local businesses, changing the way we see urban deliveries for the better."

Fred Purse, Co founder

“Pedal Collective is a small team of dedicated and experienced riders working together to provide sustainable delivery for local businesses that serve the community of Bristol. Putting people over profit and striving to make Bristol’s roads a little bit greener. It’s a team that I am proud to be a part of.”

Sam Haward, Co founder

“At Roots sustainability is something that is very important to us, from our packaging to the way we deliver our wild bouquets. Partnering with the Pedal Collective means we can get our flowers to our customers in the most eco-friendly way possible - quickly, efficiently and with a smile! Their commitment to sustainability, community and great communication aligns perfectly with our values, making them the ideal delivery partner for our Bristol City Centre customers”

Katie, Roots Floral Designs

The team are very proud to be starting their journey partnering with some of Bristol's best businesses as well as national clients that align with their values.

Rob, Co founder tells us a little about the Cooperatives short term ambitions.

We want to grow the business slowly and carefully, minimising risks and ensuring long-term success. By taking a measured approach, we can focus on building strong customer relationships, refining our services, and maintaining financial stability.

This deliberate growth strategy means we can adapt to market changes, make well-informed decisions, and establish a solid foundation before scaling further. Rather than rushing expansion and risking instability.

We really hope to be able to welcome more members to the cooperative, giving more people the opportunity to benefit from the worker led and focussed environment.

We'd love to broaden our offering too, by building a fleet of varied cargo bikes. This'll increase our capacity to work with more clients within the city of Bristol, collecting a delivering items of all shapes and sizes.

We'll also be engaging more and more with the local cycling community which has supported us all over the years. Our first planned event should happen this summer. Bristol's first Disaster Relief Trials (www.disasterrelieftrials.com), essentially making planning and training for a potential disaster, into a fun cargo bike competition.

Funding

With our focus on community, we hope to secure funding from the local council and sustainable transport schemes to improve our fleet. We also we have ambitions to build a humble carbon neutral base of operations, allowing us to consolidate inbound deliveries, for zero emissions final mile delivery within the city.
